Removing financial barriers through scholarship support encourages retention, helps students navigate college with confidence, and frees them to build social capital while gaining a top-notch education.

Your contributions to current use or endowment funds provide extensive programming to these deserving students. In short, your philanthropic support makes the program possible—and thereby transforms lives.

At Maryland, I joined a new club every semester. I changed my major three times. I studied abroad on the other side of the world in Australia. I held an internship with the federal government. I researched the mating habits of birds in a biology lab. I founded a free college preparatory program and started my own tutoring business. I even auditioned for an acapella group and attended sorority rush events - two experiences that didn’t pan out for me but pushed me out of my comfort zone in the healthiest of ways. I did all of these things because I knew that I had calculated these decisions through mentorship, I knew that I wanted to have several options as Jackie so liked to instill in us. I knew that I had financial support and mental fortitude from a program that poured into me each day.

IAP provided me with an opportunity that changed my life. There are no words to express my gratitude for this program. It provided me with networking opportunities, student and staff mentors, social events and the chance to explore the performing arts through annual trips to places like the Kennedy Center. But one of the greatest things is that students are placed into leadership positions and given the chance to run different aspects of the program and lead our community meetings. This program is for us by us. And we are supported by a network of positive and encouraging people who are passionate about our success—my success--and serve as amazing mentors, leaders and role models.

IAP connected me with others from different backgrounds with differing beliefs, religions, mindsets and interests. I grew to truly appreciate learning and collaborating with people across lines of difference because strength and ingenuity lies in diversity. This experience prepared me for my professional work as a teacher and now principal in Washington, D.C. I was coached and mentored by awesome IAP advisors and I use those same skills and best practices as a coach and mentor for my teachers today, helping them to set, monitor and achieve their goals.

Thank You!
